Sugar Cane
Presently there are 24 sugar mills in the State out of which 16 are in Co-operative sector and 8 are in private sector. Out of the 16 Co-operative sugar mills, 7 are closed and one private sugar mill has also not working since 2009-10. The cumulative crushing capacity of the 24 sugar mills is 67,016 TCD and the crushing capacity of the working 16 sugar mills is 49766 TCD. To run the aforementioned 16 mills profitably for 180 days upto their full crushing capacity, about 1.80 lakh hectare area is required under sugarcane crop so that about 896 lakh quintals of sugarcane is available for crushing. During the year 2014-15, area under sugarcane was 94,000 hectares from which 705 lakh quintals of sugarcane is produced ,out of which 569 lakh quintals of sugarcane was crushed and 53.6 lakh quintal of sugar was produced.
