Introduction Agriculture and Farmer welfare Department
Punjab is the backbone of the Indian Agriculture where Agriculture continues to be an important sector of the State’s economy in terms of employment and contributes about 17% of the Gross State Domestic Product. The State has about 4.2 million hectares of cultivable area, which is 1.5% geographical area of the country. It produces about 19 % of India’s wheat and 11 % of rice and 5 % of cotton, 10% of milk, 20% of honey and 48% of mushrooms grown in the country. It has contributed 25-50% of rice and 38-75 % of wheat to the central pool of food grains over the last four decades, the following initiatives are being taken by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Punjab. Due to the efforts made by Agriculture Department, average yield of wheat has raised from 42.00 Qtl / hact. to 51.88 Qtl/hac. During 2018-19 there was record production of 182.62 Lac. Ton Wheat as a result the state has bagged Krishi karman award Similarly During the year 2017-18, there was record production of 199.65 LMT of paddy productivity of 65.16 quintal per hectare. Also record cotton productivity of 776 kg lint/ha was witnessed during 2018-19.
To improving the institutional framework and to strengthen the agriculture sector the Punjab State Farmers and Farm Workers Commission Act, 2017 has been enacted to empower and safeguard the interests of the farming community. Further, the Punjab State Council for Agricultural Education to promote Agricultural Education in the State has also been established. To ensure the agricultural marketing reforms and greater use of technology Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets Act, 1961 has been amended.
