Welcome To District Sangrur (Punjab)--Introduction
The district Sangrur takes its name from its headquarters town, Sangrur. It is said to have been founded about four hundred years back. The net area sown of the old district was 440000 Ha., consists 6 sub divisions, 12 developmental blocks and 720 villagesThe new formation of District Sangrur came into existence after the separation of district Barnala in 2007. The economy of the district is mainly based on the agriculture & allied activities .The district falls in the Southern part of the Punjab State & falls between 29°-4’ & 30°-4’ North latitude and 75°-18’ and 76°-13’ East latitude . The district shares its boundaries with Ludhiana district In North, Patiala district in East, Barnala district in the West & Hissar district of Haryana in its South.
District at Glance
In the last 3 decades, District Sangrur has great achievements in the field of wheat & paddy production. Area under wheat increased from 274000 hectare to 283000 hectare and in paddy increased from 11000 hectare to 262000 hectare during 1970-71 to 2007-08. District stands on the top in the productivity of wheat& paddy.It has also an important place in the production of vegetables as compared to the other districts Of the State. The district has also made a significant contribution in the productivity of cotton and sugarcane. It is all due to the tools of green revolution like high yielding variety seeds, good extension services of the agriculture department, improved irrigated system and introduction of technology in agriculture sector. The district has one river mainly known as Ghaghar which is flowing in Andana block. The district has two mainly agriculture processing industries namely Pepsi Foods Channo in Bhawanigarh block and KRBL in Bhasure in Dhuri tehsil for rice shelling and export their product that is known as India Gate rice.
